A Golden Hour Family Photoshoot at Four Seasons Hampshire

As a Four Seasons Hampshire family photographer, I met this family on their last evening of a holiday from Miami, and within about ten minutes I knew exactly why they’d wanted this session.

Mum is a photographer herself, back home in the States, so she already understood something a lot of my clients need reassuring about: that being in front of the camera matters just as much as being behind it. She told me straight away that this session wasn’t really about beautiful family portraits for the wall, though we got those too. It was about her being in the photographs with her girls. Not directing, not organising snacks and hairbrushes from the sidelines. In them.

Working With Two Very Different Girls

Olivia is seven and an absolute natural in front of the camera. She’s the classic eldest daughter: she listens, she gets stuck in, and about halfway through the session she started showing me her cartwheels in the long grass, completely unprompted. I’ll take genuine joy over a posed smile every time, so we just let her go for it.

Sienna is three, and she was having none of it for a good chunk of the evening. Shy, apprehensive, not remotely interested in a stranger with a camera pointing at her. That’s completely normal for a three-year-old, and it’s exactly why I don’t push. We slowed right down, let her watch her big sister for a while, and gradually she came round on her own terms rather than being coaxed into it. Some of my favourite images from the whole session are from that point, once she’d relaxed enough to be herself.

Kites, Ribbons and the Long Grass

As a Four Seasons Hampshire family photographer, most of my time with this family was spent out in the meadow just beyond the hotel grounds, which at that time of the evening was doing all the work for me. Long golden grass, a kite, some trailing ribbon, and a family who just walked, ran and played their way through it while I stayed a little way back with my camera.

The family had also asked for a picnic-style section of the evening, so they’d ordered a box of cookies from the hotel, and I brought along some blankets and a picnic basket to set the scene. We laid it all out in a clearing in the grass and let the girls climb in and out of it as they pleased, which gave us a lovely stretch of calmer, closer images once the running around had worn off a little. Sienna in particular settled properly once she had something to sit on and a biscuit in hand.

The moments between Mum and the girls were the real priority of the evening, and we found plenty of them: foreheads together, a hand held up to catch the light, Sienna curled into her mum’s side once she’d finally settled. Dad had his moments too, carrying Sienna along the path, walking hand in hand with Olivia, but this session was always going to be led by what Mum needed to see herself in.

Finishing at the Hotel

As the light started to fade we walked back to the hotel grounds for a handful of more formal portraits in front of the building itself, the kind of image that says exactly where you were and why the evening mattered. It felt like a nice way to close things out: a bit more composed after an hour of movement and grass stains, but still relaxed.
